week 1 journal entry HRM 540
This first week in HRM 540 has been such a great learning experience for me. This is the first class so far that has been the most exciting for me. One of the things that surprised me about this course is that Human Resources can be so creative and fun. I used to think that HR was all about policies and procedures. However this class is allowing me the opportunity to visualize different aspects of HR. For example ,our first assignment was to build a competency model & career path for our very own job. At first I was so nervous , because I felt like describing a job or career path is always a long paragraph full of explanations. However this first assignment gave me the opportunity to visually describe a potential career path and expectations for someone who is considering my job. This task has made me realize how important it is to make a connection with your potential employees by helping them to visualize options in their career path. Something that I already started applying at work leveraging performance terms and tools that I picked up from our book. Which by the way, I really like how chapter 2 assists the reader by displaying charts and graphs explaining the relation between performance, employee and development.Specifically , IDP( individual development plans) i took this info back with me to work and decided to conduct 1:1 sessions with all my team to develop plans individually tailored to their career goals with our company and we did a bubble chart that showed 2 options for their career path. So far i have received great feedback from my team and they feel like it added value to their employee experience. Something that I have a hard time is initiating "checking in" conversation when i already know there is a troubled team member, weather it is personal or work related. I'm exited to learn about handling challenging conversations and how to pre-plan for them.
